East meets West

by Chinmaya Dunster RAGAS RELAX

In his latest musical offering, Chinmaya Dunster explores five traditional Ragas in an "alaap" form - pure, directionless wanderings within the ragas structure but without the distractions of rhythm or fixed melody. With the simplicity of the compositions he has successfully created an intimate, open and fluid soundscape for the listener to relax into. Specifically suited for restorative yoga, relaxation, meditation, wellness practices and the healing arts.

"When I pick up my sarod and prepare to play an Indian Classical raga, I feel as if I am about to enter on a pilgrimage, a sacred journey of discovery. It is a great mystery... these ancient ragas are not just rules of how to play the twelve musical notes; they are spiritual places to be visited." - Chinmaya Dunster

by Tya Tribal Sutras
The inspiration for this music came from a stay in Australia and a deep experience of the aboriginal culture.
The name "Tya" ('the earth') came from a book of aboriginal stories given to me by a wonderful native woman. I chose the name because I like the way the Aboriginals see themselves as part of everything. I love their close connection with nature and strong appreciation for life in general. With the music, I have tried to interpret their spirit in sound.

by Chinmaya Dunster Celtic Ragas
Chinmaya fell in love with the sarod at an all-night concert in Delhi in '79. It was then that the parallels between Celtic Folk and Indian Classical music hit him like a revelation; the connection was made and Celtic Ragas was conceived. Upon meeting American folk-rock guitarist Jamie in Pune in '89, the music heard on this CD was born.
It's a musical love affair between Celtic melodies and Indian instrumentation.

This music blends sacred sounds from Buddhist lands with acoustic instruments from around the world: the sarod and santoor from India, Celtic harp, flute and guitar. Melodious and easily accessible, the music aims to evoke the inner Feng Shui - known to Buddhists as the Eightfold Path - the essence of which brings transformation to our inner world. Descriptions of the eight aspects of the Path are included with the CD as well as a practical guide to using each associated track of music to bring these aspects into harmony within us.
