Mystic

In the beautiful rugged mountains of the Southern French Alpes d’Haute Provence lies a 300-year-old (or more) farm house that belongs to my dear, long-time, French friends. I have been visiting them there regularly for 25 years, spending time in the quiet serenity of the mountains, hiking, resting, enjoying the nature and our friendship.

I have come to love the place and feel at home there. Since several years, I have had the idea to do a music project there, and finally in autumn 2010 the plan was crystallized and put into action. I wanted to make solo recordings of some of the woodwind instruments I play, mostly flutes and saxophones – for this PURE project, without any accompaniment at all, I envisioned not only a quiet environment, but also beautiful, inspiring nature around me. I wanted a combined work-holiday and the old French farm house seemed like the perfect place.

The restauration works had progressed enough to have a large well-sounding room ready to be used in the colder season and my friends were very enthusiastic about the idea. So I packed a part of my studio in Holland into our car and, with my beloved, drove down to South France.

The first days we took time to relax and adjust to the change from being in the city to being in nature.
On a full moon night we started the project with a ritual outside. For about a week, I recorded a few hours every day. I mostly just improvised whatever came up, sometimes weaving in melodies I had composed in the past.

Some days, before I could start, I had to go outside and chase a big flock of sheep down the hill, so the bells around their necks would not ring too loudly into all my improvisations. After all, it was a make-shift studio in a room not specially isolated or intended for recording.

Every day, we would go out for long walks, enjoy the exploding autumn colors of red, green, yellow and brown, pick baskets full of chestnuts from the ancient chestnut trees on the land, collect mushrooms, climb in trees, take photos and dig out tree seedlings to take home to Holland. In the evenings, when it got colder, we cooked simple dinners and lit a fire in the fireplace. When I was recording, my beloved, who’s an artist and designer, was painting and tailoring a wonderful fairy coat for herself. In between, our friends came to visit us and made sure we didn’t work too hard.

At the end of 12 wonderful days, we drove home, in the trunk hard discs with about 80 recorded pieces. Picking out what I felt were the gems, some pieces were more meditative or shamanic, others more jazzy or intense. The simplicity of the naked instrument is the heart of my nature and purity of this album. I wish to share with you the joy, depth and beauty of this Mediterranean autumn nature, of the love and friendship I experienced. I am truly blessed.
I dedicate this music to my beloved and life companion Vimal and the new life growing in her.
Vimal, you are to me the most divine manifestation of the feminine and the resonant body of our love – this music flows and is born through us together.

Praful volgde een diepe roeping en presenteert nu met zijn nieuwste (inmiddels 5e) CD 'Where Spirits Live' een uur mooie muziek die volledig uit stilte voortkomt. Op 6 intieme, langzame nummers slaat Praful op zijn eigen manier een brug tussen westerse en Indiaase muziek en instrumenten. Nummers als Bird of the Soul en de titeltrack zijn op raga´s gebaseerd, waaruit Praful's liefde en passie voor de Indiaase muziek en de Bansuri (Indiaase Bamboe Fluit) spreekt. Op Bhakti en Step Without Feet zijn de sopraansax en (Thaise) bamboosax in hun volle puurheid en kracht te horen. Op Holy Land staat de melancholieke melodica centraal, en de laatste track Love is the Diamond bespeelt Praful het nog vrij onbekende instrument Hang en de dwarsfluit. Er is ook veel organische, lichte wereld-percussie te horen en acoustische gitaar. Hoewel voornamelijk instrumen-taal, zijn er af en toe ook Sanskrit mantra´s te horen. Muzikaal ondersteund wordt Praful door o.a. Afra Mussawisade (percussie/Iran), Heiko Dijker (tabla/NL), Pablo Nahar (contrabas/Suriname), Nelson Latif (gitaar/Brazilie), Sandhya Sanjana (vocal/India). Het album is geproduceerd door Praful zelf en gemixed samen met de ambient-sound-master Maneesh de Moor.

Saxofonist-fluitist-multi-instrumentalist Praful is een pionier waar het de versmelting van wereldmuziek, jazz en meditatiemuziek betreft. Hij is muzikaal getogen in Nederland (AHK), in India bij de Fluit-grootmeester Hariprasad Chaurasia en in Brazilie, waar hij enige tijd geleefd heeft. Zijn 3 bij het Amsterdamse label Therapy Records verschenen albums met wereld-lounge-jazz waren internationaal zeer succesvol (VS Billboard Charts, #1 VS-radio-hit-single SIGH). Met Deva Premal, de bekende Mantra zangeres, heeft hij sinds de ’90’s vaak getoured, heeft veel van de Mantras op haar CDs gecomponeerd en haar album Dakshina geproduceerd.
Hij heeft ook opgetreden met bv Carlos Nakai (v. Eckhart Tolle), Dave Koz, Jeffrey Osborne, Jonathan Butler, Lilian Vieira (Zuco103). Praful is een regelmatige gast op spirituele Festivals zoals NoMind Festival in Zweden en het Open Up – Festival in NL.
